What happened

Cloudflare announced on 21 September 2026 that Python Workers are generally available, two years after they were first introduced. Cloudflare says Python is now a first-class, fully supported language on its developer platform.

What we know

  • Python Workers run a WebAssembly-compiled Python interpreter based on Pyodide inside the Workers runtime, which has supported WebAssembly since 2018.
  • Platform bindings are now native. Previously, passing Python objects to services such as Queues required explicit conversion to JavaScript objects at the RPC boundary; Cloudflare says that conversion is now handled inside the runtime and the Python SDK, so bindings can be used "without writing a single line of JavaScript code".
  • Popular web frameworks run inside a Worker through built-in connectors: workers.asgi for asynchronous frameworks such as FastAPI, and workers.wsgi for synchronous ones such as Django and Flask. The Workers platform itself acts as the web server, replacing the role of Uvicorn or Gunicorn.
  • Python Workers can connect to Workers AI, R2, D1, Hyperdrive, Durable Objects, Queues and Workflows, and a Python Worker can be created from inside another Worker using Dynamic Workers.

What is not yet confirmed

The post excerpt reviewed for this story does not cover package compatibility limits, cold-start times or pricing differences from JavaScript Workers. VoltKit has not deployed a Python Worker to test the claims.

Why it matters

Python has long been a second-class citizen on edge platforms, where JavaScript dominates. A GA Python runtime that runs unmodified FastAPI or Django apps lowers the barrier for teams whose existing code and libraries are Python, and the native bindings remove a class of errors Cloudflare says was common for both humans and AI agents writing Workers.
