How images are placed on the page
With a fixed page size the image is scaled to fit inside the printable area (page minus margins) and centred, so nothing is cropped. Auto orientation turns the page sideways for wide images so they fill more of it. Fit to image sets each page to the image's own proportions, which is ideal for scanned documents and screenshots.
File size and quality
JPG files are embedded as they are, so the PDF is about the sum of the image sizes and the quality is untouched. PNG and WebP are embedded losslessly, which keeps transparency (shown over white) but can make the PDF large for photographs. If the result is bigger than you'd like, compress the images first with the Image Compressor, or convert PNG photos to JPG.
Photos taken in portrait mode carry an orientation flag rather than rotated pixels. The tool reads that flag and rotates the image before embedding it, so pages come out the right way up.
