How to play Snake

  1. Press Start (or Space), then steer with the arrow keys or WASD. On a phone, swipe on the board or use the pad below it.
  2. Each piece of food adds one segment to the snake and one point to your score, and shortens the interval between moves slightly.
  3. Hitting a wall or any part of your own body ends the game.
  4. Press Space or P to pause; the game also pauses automatically if you switch tabs.

Scoring

  • One point per food eaten. Length is score plus the three starting segments.
  • The best score is kept in your browser's local storage.

Tips

  • Move in long sweeps along the edges and turn in from the walls, leaving the middle open for later.
  • Queue your next turn early: the game remembers up to two inputs, so a quick double tap for a U-turn is safe.
  • When the snake gets long, follow your own tail; the space it frees is always safe to enter.
  • Slow your hands as the speed rises. Most late-game deaths come from a rushed extra keypress, not the speed itself.

About Snake

Snake dates back to the 1976 arcade game Blockade and became a global habit when Nokia shipped it on the 6110 in 1997. The appeal is the same today: rules you understand in one second and a difficulty curve that comes entirely from your own growing body.

This version uses a 20×20 grid, walls that end the game (no wrap-around), and a speed that rises gradually with your score.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the snake turn before I pressed the key?

The game queues up to two direction changes so quick taps are not lost. If you press a direction and then its opposite before the next move, the opposite is ignored to prevent instant self-collision.

Can the snake pass through walls?

No. This is the classic ruleset where walls end the game. A wrap-around mode is a possible future option.

How fast does it get?

The interval between moves starts at 160 ms and shortens by 4 ms per food, down to a floor of 70 ms.

Is my score uploaded anywhere?

No. The best score is stored in your browser only.
