The tip formula
Tip = bill × tip percent ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ number of people. Example: a 1,850 bill with a 10% tip is 185 in tip, 2,035 in total, or 1,017.50 each for two people.
Rounding options change the tip slightly: rounding the total of 2,035 up to the next whole unit changes nothing here, but a 15% tip on 1,234 (185.10) becomes 186 when rounded up. The effective percentage is displayed so you can see what you're actually leaving.
How much to tip
Customs vary a lot. In India a service charge is often already on the bill and tipping 5–10% beyond it is a courtesy, not an expectation. In the United States 15–20% is standard for table service. In Japan tipping is unusual. When a service charge is included, check the bill before adding a tip on top. If a tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount in your country, enter that amount as the bill.
