How to play Colour Challenge
- Press Start. A grid of coloured tiles appears with a 45-second timer.
- Tap or click the tile whose shade differs from the others. A correct pick advances you a level instantly.
- A wrong pick costs three seconds. The grid grows from 3×3 to 8×8 and the colour difference gets smaller as you go.
- When time is up, your level is your score. The best level is saved on this device.
Scoring
- The level you reach when the timer ends is your score. Best levels are saved separately for normal and assist mode.
Tips
- Relax your focus and look at the whole grid at once; the odd tile tends to pop out in peripheral vision.
- Tilt or move the screen slightly. Small viewing-angle changes often reveal subtle lightness differences.
- Turn up your screen brightness and avoid glare; both flatten colour differences.
- If you are colour blind, the differences here are in lightness rather than hue, so most people can play. Assist mode keeps them larger.
About colour perception
This game varies only the lightness of a single hue, so it tests how finely you can distinguish shades rather than colour naming. Human eyes are more sensitive to lightness differences in the mid-range than at the extremes, and sensitivity varies with fatigue, ambient light and screen quality.
Because the game is inherently visual, it cannot be made independent of colour. Assist mode exists so that the differences never become uncomfortably subtle.
