What Are Entry Effects in Live-Streaming Apps?

Entry effects are the animations that announce someone joining a live room. How apps use them for VIP members, why SVGA plays them and how to avoid replays.

An entry effect is the animation a live room plays when someone arrives: a banner with their name slides in, a car or a creature crosses the screen, a ring of light surrounds their seat. Everyone sees who has just joined, and the person arriving gets a moment of recognition. This article explains where entry effects appear, how apps decide who gets one, why they are often SVGA files and how to play them without wearing out the room. To browse artwork, see entry effects in the VoltKit gift store.

Where entry effects appear

Entry effects belong to rooms where people come and go while something is happening: live streams with a host and an audience, voice chat rooms with seats on a stage, multi-guest rooms and game rooms. The effect plays once, over the room, for everyone present, then gets out of the way. Common shapes:

  • A name banner across the lower part of the screen, often with a badge or a level.
  • A vehicle, creature or crest that crosses the room for a few seconds.
  • A glow, ring or burst around the newcomer's seat in a voice room.
  • A short full-screen moment, kept for the highest tiers.

Who gets one

An entry effect is a perk, and the app decides who has it. Live apps commonly give them to members of a paid tier (often called VIP, with SVIP, "super VIP", above it), to people who reach a level and to winners of events, and many tie the size of the effect to the tier: a banner for a lower tier, a full-screen effect for the top one. Some apps also let people switch entry effects off, as they can for gift animations. The guide to planning VIP and SVIP items walks through tiers, items and where the rules live.

Why entry effects are often SVGA

SVGA stores an animation as pictures with their timing, and an SVGA player library draws them on top of the screen. Every frame keeps a full alpha channel, so a glowing car or a soft-edged banner sits cleanly over live video, and an SVGA 2.0 file can carry its own sound, which starts and stops on given frames. Open-source players exist for the web, Android, iOS and Flutter. The original web, Android and iOS players were archived by their owner on 6 February 2023 and remain available under the Apache-2.0 licence; flutter_svga is an active Flutter player under the MIT licence (SVGAPlayer-Web, SVGAPlayer-Android, SVGAPlayer-iOS, flutter_svga, read in October 2026).

Animated WebP and video with an alpha channel are the usual alternatives. SVGA vs animated WebP compares the formats for gifts, and the same reasoning holds for entry effects. In the VoltKit gift store, an SVGA gift's watermarked preview plays with its sound on the gift's own page; the SVGA gifts page covers the format, the free SVGA Player and SVGA Maker.

Names and avatars inside the animation

Many entry effects show the arriving person's name or picture inside the animation. SVGA players do this by swapping a named image in the file at run time. SVGAPlayer-Web replaces an image, or draws text on it, by its ImageKey ("ask your designer tell you the ImageKey", its README says); SVGAPlayer-Android can "Replace an element with Bitmap" and "Add text above an element"; flutter_svga can "Replace text, swap images, hide layers" on named layers (SVGAPlayer-Android, read in October 2026).

That only works when the file was built with those layers in an animation tool. A file made of flattened frames, such as an SVGA converted from a video with SVGA Maker, has no avatar or name slot: draw the name beside the animation in your app instead. If you commission an effect, ask for the named layers and their keys in the brief (custom designs).

Playing it at the right moment

The trigger is a join. VoltKit RTC tells every client in the room when someone joins, with their identity, role and metadata (client SDK events). From there:

  1. Check the tier with your server. A member's own app can change the participant metadata it sends, so it is display data, not proof of a paid tier. Keep the list of who may show which effect on your server.
  2. Play once per visit. A connection that drops and comes back reaches the room as participantLeft with the reason disconnected, then participantJoined again. Remember who has already had their effect during this visit, or a weak network replays it.
  3. Queue arrivals. Play one effect at a time. When many people arrive together, shorten the queue: skip the lower tiers, or show only the latest arrivals.
  4. Let people turn effects off, and show a quiet line of text instead for anyone who prefers reduced motion.

Size, sound and the screen

An entry effect plays while people talk, so keep it brief and keep the room usable: faces, chat and controls stay visible, and the animation never blocks a tap. Design for portrait phone screens first, and keep the file small enough to start at once on a lower-end phone during a call. Browsers may wait for a tap before they play sound, so the picture alone should say who has arrived.

Before shipping, open the file in the free SVGA Player, choose a screenshot of your room as the background and the Phone 9:16 frame, and watch it once with looping off. The SVGA guide covers files that will not play.

Getting entry effects

The VoltKit gift store has a page for entry effects and one for VIP and SVIP items. Previews are watermarked; sign in to see prices, or claim gifts marked Free. The gift licence lets you use what you buy in your own apps and business, including as a paid VIP perk, but not resell or share the file itself. For effects built around your own tiers, names and avatars, send a custom design enquiry; if you are also building the room, RTC with 3D gifts covers gift events and playback beside VoltKit RTC.

Frequently asked questions

What is an entry effect?

A short animation that plays for everyone in a live room or voice room when a particular person joins, often with their name. Apps use entry effects as perks for VIP and SVIP members, high levels and event winners.

Is an entry effect the same as a gift?

No. A gift is sent by one person to another and plays when it is sent; an entry effect belongs to the person arriving and plays when they join. Both are often SVGA files, and the same player can play both.

Which file format do entry effects use?

Many apps use SVGA, which keeps a transparent background and can carry sound. Some use animated WebP or a video with an alpha channel. Use a format your app already plays on every platform it ships on.

How do I put the user's name or avatar inside an entry effect?

Use an SVGA file built with a named image layer for the avatar or the name. SVGA players for the web, Android and Flutter can replace that layer with a picture or draw text on it at run time. A file made of flattened frames has no such layer.

Why does an entry effect play twice?

Usually because a reconnect looked like a new arrival. In VoltKit RTC a dropped connection reaches the room as participantLeft with the reason disconnected, then participantJoined when the person is back, so remember who has already had their effect during the visit.
