Why convert JPG to PNG?
PNG is the right choice when an image will be edited again, when it needs a transparent background added later, or when a system only accepts PNG uploads. Because PNG is lossless, converting stops the quality loss that happens every time a JPG is re-saved.
One thing to know: a PNG made from a JPG will usually be larger than the original, often two to five times larger. The JPG artefacts are still there, they're just now stored exactly. If you need a smaller file rather than a lossless one, use the Image Compressor or convert to WebP instead.
What happens to metadata?
The converter redraws the image, so EXIF data such as camera model, date and GPS location is not carried into the PNG. Orientation from the EXIF data is applied before conversion, which is why photos taken in portrait mode come out the right way up.
