When to convert PNG to JPG

JPG suits photographs and any image with lots of colour gradients: it compresses them to a fraction of the PNG size with no visible difference at quality 85–95. It's also what most cameras, phones, email clients and upload forms expect.

JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent regions must be filled with a solid colour. White is the usual choice for documents and product images; pick black or a brand colour if the image sits on a dark page.

When to keep PNG

Keep PNG for logos, icons, screenshots with sharp text and anything that needs transparency. JPG blurs hard edges and creates halos around text, which looks worse than the extra bytes are worth. For those images, PNG to WebP is a better way to save space.

Frequently asked questions

What quality should I use?

90% is a good default that keeps the image visually identical while cutting most of the size. Go down to 75–80% for web images where size matters; avoid values below 60% unless artefacts are acceptable.

What happens to transparent parts of the PNG?

They are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default. JPG has no transparency channel, so this is unavoidable.

Will the JPG be smaller?

Almost always, and often dramatically: a 4 MB PNG screenshot commonly becomes a 300–500 KB JPG. Flat-colour graphics with few colours are the exception, where PNG can already be tiny.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser with the Canvas API; nothing is sent to a server.
