Why WebP?
WebP is supported by every modern browser and is the format most performance audits recommend for photos on the web. It uses more efficient compression than JPG, so a typical product photo drops from 250 KB to around 170 KB with no visible change, and it supports transparency, which JPG doesn't.
The trade-off is compatibility outside the browser: some older desktop apps and email clients don't open WebP. Keep the JPG originals for those cases and use WebP on your website.
Choosing the quality
WebP quality numbers aren't directly comparable to JPG's. A WebP at 80% usually looks like a JPG at 90% while being smaller. For hero images and portfolios, 85–90% is safe; for thumbnails, 70–75% is plenty. Lossless WebP preserves every pixel but is much larger than lossy, so use it only for graphics.
