Lossy or lossless?

Lossless WebP is a drop-in replacement for PNG: same pixels, same transparency, typically 20–30% smaller. Use it for logos, icons, diagrams and screenshots with text.

Lossy WebP is the big win for PNG photographs and complex screenshots: files often shrink by 80–90% while still supporting transparency. At quality 80–90 the difference is hard to spot even side by side.

Transparency details

WebP stores an alpha channel in both modes. In lossy mode the alpha channel itself is compressed losslessly by default in browsers, so edges stay crisp. Semi-transparent gradients, such as soft shadows, are preserved too.

Frequently asked questions

Will my transparent background stay transparent?

Yes. Unlike JPG, WebP supports an alpha channel, and this tool keeps it in both lossy and lossless modes.

Why is the WebP larger than my PNG?

Small graphics with very few colours can already be tiny as PNG. Lossy WebP has a fixed overhead that can exceed such a PNG. In that case keep the PNG, or try lossless WebP.

Which browsers support WebP?

All current browsers display WebP. Creating WebP in this tool requires Chrome, Edge, Firefox or a recent Safari.

Are files uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
